Canoeing on Derwentwater

Derwentwater is one of the prettiest lakes with lots of islands and varied shoreline to explore.  You have wonderful views of Skiddaw, Catbells and Borrowdale as you head down the lake - it really lets you see the fells differently.

There is lots to explore, if you are looking for a short trip -  you can explore the sandbank or Lingholm islands and lone tree island are just around the corner from Nichol End and can be explored in under an hour.  If you have a bit longer you can go to St Herbert's Island in the middle of the lake where a hermit used to live - have a good hunt to find the remains of his cottage.  Or even follow the shoreline round and explore all the nooks and crannies.

No previous experience is needed to hire a canoe from Nichol End; however it is weather dependent and wind can be an issue.  We always have an instructor on hand to offer advice and help.

Options for canoeing from include simple boat hire - by the hour, tuition, a guided tour or instructed session, paddle club or as part of a swallows and amazons adventure.  Canoeing is popular for groups - from a KS1 school party in rafted canoes to a family or corporate fun day to various journeys and sporting challenges.

If you hire regularly (or would like to) then have a look at our memberships where you pay a single annual fee (or monthly DD) for unlimited use.  (subject to weather conditions and normal hire rules)
